Distinctive Ringing
Distinctive ringing is a feature offered by a variety of telephone companies, marketed under different names depending on the service provider. Distinctive ringing enables the user to manage and customize four available ringtones and apply them to desired contacts. Essentially the feature allows different incoming calls to have a unique ringtone. Essentially, the subscriber receiving the call hears different ringtones when receiving a call depending on who is calling. However, the party placing the call will hear the conventional ringing sound on the line. This feature often requires supporting hardware and software in order to properly function. Using this feature, one can also merge voice and fax telephone lines into one. However, this option requires the line to be available when receiving/sending a fax. The distinctive call feature permits household members to identify who is calling, allowing the person being called to answer the call.
Distinctive Ringing is widely applicable and is extremely practical and convenient. Using the right hardware allows innovative features for home phones. For instance, this feature can be used when room mates are living together. In such a situation where incoming calls are directed to different parties within the same household, customized ringtones can be customized and set up specifically for each telephone set in the home. This means that the ringtone sound will depend on which party is being called. The different ringtones may be obtained by equipping one of the phones with an instrument called ‘ring selector’. The ring selector is used to filter out any one type of a ringtone. This helps to identify both which phone is ringing, and whose phone is ringing. It helps save time when one does not have to run for a call that is actually not meant for him or her.
Many companies have begun offering Distinctive Ringing. Multiple telephone numbers are offered to be incorporated on to one phone line. Each of these numbers will then have a different ringing pattern. This means that the phone receives different area phone numbers which, when dialed will reach the same destination. However, with the use of Distinctive Ringing, the subscriber’s phone will have different ring tones depending on the area code from which the phone call is placed.
